The game between South Africa went all the way to penalty kicks to decide a winner. Goalkeeper Soumaila Diakite made two saves and Lehlohonolo Majoro put his shot wide for Mali to win the shootout shootout.
It was 1-1 in regular time with goals from Tokelo Rantie and Mali Captain Seydou Keita. Siphiwe Tshabalala was the only South African to find the net during the penalty shootout. The hosts hoped to repeat the success they found last time they held the tournament and were crown champions.
Mali continue to the semi-finals and will face strong opposition in either Nigeria or Ivory Coast. The Ivory Coast eliminated Mali last year on their way to the finals.
